Thematically, this novel looks at various kinds of repressions, in different eras. The central story is that of a woman, Feride, who in her fifties arrives at the painful realization that her sexual choice may not have been the right one. Feride looks back on her marriage, at the demise of her love for her husband, and on her close and tender relationship with her stepdaughter, Şirin. The story is surrounded by the social unrest in Turkey in the last twenty-five years and its impact on the characters’ lives. Through the experiences of some characters, the novel also looks back at the 1940s, 50s and 60s, at a century ago, and it also throws a glance at an imaginary time in 2025. The scope of the novel is sweeping yet intimate. The deep message of the book is that an individual’s life is not a limited segment of time, but rather a passage which is filtered by the past – by family and socio-political histories - and which flows into future lives. Experiences of love, pain and violence tend to dip their roots into the repressed inclinations of the deeper self, and their impact transcends the individual life span. The inner wounds of parents and the clashes of history that befall them are bound to be reflected on children’s behaviors and choices.
